Music Instrument(s) Taught: Bass
Location: Seattle (Tacoma)
I am a lifelong musician with a musically diverse family, and have been exposed to all kinds of music as long as I can remember. I started on violin at age 5, but switched to bass when I was 10 years old. Primarily classically trained, I also have a lot of experience playing bluegrass, jazz, folk, and funk bass. For me, electric and upright bass opened the doors to play with a wide variety of musicians, genres, and groups that I would not have gotten to otherwise. With such a broad range of sounds to explore, from I-V bluegrass plunks to virtuostic solo repertoire to heavily effected electric bass shredding, I think playing bass can be a lifelong commitment and an incredible journey. I studied under Chris Burns and occasionally with Anna Jensen, both of TSO, and later under Steven Schermer at University of Puget Sound, where I received a BA in Music. Some of the players who inspire and inform my playing include Edgar Meyer, Joe Dart, Francois Rabbath, Gary Karr, Christian McBride, and Chris Thile. To me, the best thing about music is that it can be shared, taught, transformed, and renewed by anyone willing to put in the right amount of effort.
