Jonathan is a trumpet player and pianist currently living in the Pacific Northwest. His primary background is in small ensemble post-bop, but he is also experienced in a wide variety of other genre’s and settings. He is available for studio sessions, private lessons, and gigs.
Jonathan grew up in the Pacific Northwest, where his interest in music began at his family piano at age five. He studied orchestral music through high school, but resolved to learn jazz after encountering the music of Clifford Brown and Brad Mehldau. He attended Berklee College of Music from 2003 to 2005, studying trumpet with Greg Hopkins, Tiger Okoshi, and Charlie Lewis. He then returned to the Pacific Northwest and studied piano and composition with Ezra Weiss, obtaining his Bachelor’s degree in Jazz Piano Performance from Portland State University in 2009. While in Portland, Jonathan worked as a teacher for The Northwest Children’s Theater, as a rehearsal pianist for many other theater productions in the area, played piano on a cruise boat during the summer of 2008, and toured with songwriter Nick Jaina on trumpet in 2010.
In the fall of 2010 Jonathan moved to New York City to continue pursuing music. He joined the Pete Rodriguez salsa band, and the Afro-beat group Asiko, played weekly with Uros Markovic‘s gospel series at the Bowery Mission, toured with songwriter Seth Martin, worked for Redeemer Presbyterian, and Christ Church NYC as a trumpet player, and volunteered for the non-profit Search and Restore, promoting and facilitating the 2011 Undead Jazz festival. He frequented several jam sessions, including John Benitez‘ weekly sessions in Queens, and the Fat Cat jam, while also busking, and playing with small jazz combos throughout the city.
In 2011 Jonathan moved to Philadelphia where his primary project was working with songwriter Cameron DeWhitt, whom he has played with since 2008 . He also freelanced as a studio musician, played at Circle of Hope, and performed with motown band The York Street Hustle at top Philadelphia venues such as Milkboy, Jonny Brendas, and Tritone. In the last year Jonathan has played with such diverse acts as saxophonist Jeff Coffin, mandolinist Jake Jolliff, jazz guitarist Aaron Summerfield, and alternative rock band mewithoutYou. His primary current project is still the Philadelphia based Cameron DeWhitt Band. Jonathan moved back to the Portland area in 2012 where he is currently working on a composition project, and making his living as a studio musician and teacher.
