Kelly began playing music when she was 7 years old and at age 11 she began to play trumpet in a brass band. Throughout high school she was section leader and also placed first in many competitions and honor bands. She had the privilege to be one of the two students from Minnesota to march in The Rose bowl Parade in 2005. Having the privilege of taking lessons from William Himes and Phil Smith from
the New York Philharmonic Orchestra, she wanted to teach what she had learned. Afterwards she taught trumpet in Mexico during part of her summers and during the school year taught underprivileged children in a brass band setting. After getting a scholarship to study music education at Luther College, Kelly finished her degree in trumpet performance with a jazz studies minor at Winona State University
in Winona, Minnesota. She also studied piano as well as conducting, woodwinds, brass, and string techniques classes. She currently teaches after school music programs through campfire Columbia, is pursuing masters degree in conducting at Portland State University and plays in ensembles around Portland including The Portland Wind Symphony.
