Music Instrument(s) Taught: Banjo, Bass, Guitar, Mandolin, Violin
Location: NE Portland (Fremont and Sandy)
Peter is a versatile multi instrumentalist (banjo, guitar, mandolin, fiddle, electric bass) who has played music in several different genres including bluegrass, jazz, blues, country, and folk. He has played with several well known (and lesser known) groups and artists including Dr. Corn’s Bluegrass Remedy, the Muddy Bottom Boys, Ida Viper, the Steve Hall Quintet, Front Range, Sam Hill, Peter Rowan, Vassar Clements, Jack Cooke and the Virginia Mountain Boys, Del McCoury and the Dixie Pals, and others. He is frequently called on for session work, and for his expert banjo setup work. He has won several instrument contests including the contests at Telluride, Sunset Park, and the Philadelphia Folk Festival.
He has taught at various locations, including his home (where he gives private instruction). He enjoys sharing his knowledge of how to apply a little music theory to the student’s “grasp” of their instrument to aid in the creation of tasteful melodies (improvised or composed) that can be played in different musical genres (bluegrass, blues, jazz, country), both for soloing and for accompaniment. In the case of beginning students, he can take somebody who only has the ability to recognize a major scale (do-re-mi-fa-so-la-ti-do), and can teach them some basic principles of music theory, and soon have them using their instrument to play both chords for accompaniment and melodies that fit the chords that are being used. He focuses on sharing his knowledge by having his students use their ears along with a basic understanding of music theory, rather than by using written notation, though he will write out relevant material when necessary. He is accepting new students in bluegrass fiddle, bluegrass mandolin, and melodic improvisation on the guitar (bluegrass, blues, country, and jazz).
Peter teaches bluegrass fiddle, bluegrass mandolin, bluegrass banjo, guitar (bluegrass, blues, country, jazz), electric bass.
Peter is currently accepting new students.
