Trumpet Lessons

The trumpet is typically a brass, but sometimes other material wind instrument, operated by the vibration of air in a circular chamber, with a pitch controlled by valves on top of the instrument which are pressed during operation. The trumpet is an iconic instrument, typically perceived as a loud instrument – the instrument of announcement and good news. However the trumpet can also be somber and melancholic, such as TAPS, which is played on a bugle or trumpet at a U.S. soldiers funeral.

The trumpet is an important instrument in orchestra as well, typically leading the brass section in melody. Trumpets have been around for thousands of years, and find their origin in China and the Middle East. Several trumpets dating back to 3000 BC have been found, one in particular which was made from a single sheet of metal, a technical marvel of the time. Early trumpets like these often did not have any valves, but would have at most 2 or 3 playable notes, or simply one. The addition of valves around the 1800’s increased the nobility of the trumpet, due to the increase in range.

The valves on a trumpet, when pressed, increase the length of the tube through which the air travels, thereby lowering the pitch. Most modern trumpets consist of a brass tube wound twice around, with 3 valves on top (rarely 4), and is held with both hands. The trumpeter blows and also “buzzes” into the mouthpiece, which vibrates the air through the chamber and out the cone, producing the tone we recognize as a trumpet.
