Clarinet Lessons

The Clarinet is a woodwind instrument, deriving it’s name from the Italian word Clarino, which means trumpet, with the suffix “-et” we get “little trumpet”. It was called this because early Clarinets sounded like just that – the progression of centuries has turned the Clarinet into a much different sounding instrument than the trumpet, but the name has stuck.

The Clarinet, or “licorice stick” (as it is known in modern jazz nomenclature) is known today as the instrument which is most similar to a human voice. It’s sound is produced by the vibration of air which is forced between the reed and the mouthpiece. Because of the dynamic nature of this reed, there are a wide variety of styles and sounds which can be produced through a Clarinet, and proper “embouchure” (the formation of the mouth around the mouthpiece) is one of the earliest things that a student will learn while taking Clarinet lessons.

Clarinet lessons will help students understand more deeply the theory and practice they are learning in band class. A student taking Clarinet lessons will tend to outpace those who are not, because they are receiving a level of personal education that is hard to receive in a class full of students. Clarinet lessons may incorporate Jazz and other modern genres, as well as older classical and orchestral genres to form a rounded and complete education.

Students taking Clarinet lessons will be taught music theory, ear training, proper posture and embouchure as well as group dynamics, orchestral Clarinet, quartet and Jazz groups, and solo Clarinet skills. The Musicality Network has the best Clarinet teachers in the Portland Metro area.
