Name: Garrett

Location: Downtown Portland

Garrett is a composer, multi-instrumentalist, ethnomusicologist, and multimedia artist. With works based on aesthetics of Post-Minimalism, Electronic Music, American Folk, and Non-Western Music, he centers around creative storytelling, the Internet, Science Fiction, and socio-political issues. Utilizing techniques that are often unconventional, gestural, and imaginative, his pieces prioritize accessibility to musicians and listeners with a wide range of formal education and background in music. By creating cross-genre compositions, Garrett seeks to bridge audiences who typically interact within their own, separate, communities. As a queer man with disability, Garrett advocates for uplifting marginalized communities, while dismantling toxic notions of masculinity, colonization, and capitalism.

As a performer, Garrett has experience in a diverse range of musical and theatrical ensembles. Beginning his (often informal but still invaluable) education studying a variety of guitar styles, he has additionally grown proficient as a singer, keyboardist, saxophonist, as well as a member of Javanese Gamelans. In his home state of Wyoming, Garrett has been involved with the experimental electronic music collective, M.E.A.T. and Rock and Funk informed jam band, The Foxy Morons. As a student at Portland State University, Garrett has participated in the PSU Guitar Orchestra and in Venerable Showers of Beauty Gamelan. Currently, he has undertaken study of Yangqin (Chinese hammered dulcimer) under the guidance of renowned Chinese performer, Jing Lu.

In 2015 he graduated with an Associate’s in Music Technology from Sheridan College in Sheridan, Wyoming, under the instruction of Dr. Christian Erickson(Composition/Music Technology), Dr. Ariel Downing(Musicology), and McKay Fleck(Guitar). Garrett currently holds a Bachelor’s of Music in Composition from Portland State University, having studied composition under Portland-Based composer and violist, Kenji Bunch, and Gamelan under Venerable Showers of Beauty Director, Mindy Johnston. His work has been selected in several composition competitions, resulting in performances of original work by Tamara Stefanovich, H2 Quartet, and The Rose City Trio.

In addition to his musical output, Garrett creates visual art, working in the mediums of drawing, collage, and video. When he has a spare afternoon, Garrett gets a kick out of watching dogs interact with each other, perfecting recipes for baked goods, and analyzing the social implications of reality television programs.
